Resumen en otro Idioma | Our purpose here is to conduct readings of two selections of archival fi ction based on the fi gure of Manuela Sáenz: (1) Coeur de héros, coeur d’amant (1950) ( A Hero’s Heart, a Lover’s Heart) by Haitian writer Emmeline Carriès Lemaire —translated into Spanish in 1958 under the title Bolívar héroe y amante— and (2) Manuela Sáenz, biografía novelada (1963) ( Manuela Sáenz, biographical novel) by Ecuadorian author Raquel Verdesoto de Romo Dávila. These works were written at a time in Latin American history when female intellectuals were validating their right to be citizens and, by extension, subjects of history, without prejudice to the foundational narratives which gave birth to the Nation. The reconstruction of Manuela Sáenz from the point of view of these two female authors will allow us to trace the rearticulations of feminist thought in Latin America and the movements which these authors inspired in traditional historiography. Our theoretical framework will be based on the theories of Hayden White and Francesca Gargallo concerning the narrative character of History and the philosophical nature of narrative. We will also consider the refl ections on the ideological implications of the reconstruction of the past made by Slavoj Zizek, and the thoughts of Patrizia Violi, Amparo Moreno Sardá, Joan Scott and Giulia Colaizzi on the triad genre-history-historiography. |
