dc.description.abstract1 | The objective of this paper is to study the nominal group (NG), in English and Spanish, in academic texts related to the dentistry field. In order to do this, a corpus of 10 academic texts was selected: five in English and five in Spanish. From this corpus, a sample of 1243 NGs in Spanish and 1064 NGs in English was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Each NG was described taking into account its constituents (nucleus and modifiers) and its functions within the clause: subject, direct object, indirect object, attribute, prepositional phrase, circumstantial complement and agent complement. After analyzing the NGs, in English and in Spanish, a typology of this linguistic unit was designed and the following variables were considered: syntactic role, informative status, definition, and the lexical density, taking into account the number of syllables in order to observe how this linguistic unit introduces, maintains, and specifies the reference. The function of the NG is the same in English and in Spanish: introduces, maintains and specifies the reference. In each of these languages, the writer prefers some structures of NG, among those offered by the correspondent linguistic system, to express in the written form what he/she intends to communicate. Both English and Spanish introduce, maintain, and specify the reference by means of NGs. The writer, in the kind of texts analyzed in this study, has preference for some structures of those types of NGs presented by its linguistic system in order to represent what he/she wants to communicate. Although the function of the NGs is the same in both languages, there are differences related to the variables mentioned above | es_VE |
