imagen

Resumen en otro Idioma | In this paper we describe the different mitigation strategies used by six men and six women from Merida in order to save face in interaction. We distinguished different types of mitigation, according to their being directed toward the propositional content, the illocutionary force, the origin of the utterance, or the relevance of a topic (Caffi 1999). The data shows that both men and women preferred to mitigate illocution over the other components of enunciation and illustrates similar tendencies in both genders for all types of mitigation, but we could also notice a larger number of polite mitigation resources in the discourse of women. As a possible explanation for these findings, we posit that there is a direct relationship between the occurrence of face threatening topics and the amount of mitigation, and the only reason to encounter a larger number of polite mitigation resources in the discourse of women is due to the more frequent mention of such topics |
