Relación entre la infección por el virus de la Hepatitis C (VHC) y la Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM2)

Abstract
La infección por el virus de la hepatitis C (VHC) puede contribuir con el desarrollo de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2)14. Esta relación ha sido poco estudiada en Venezuela y por tanto se propuso como objetivo el estudio de la relación de la infección por el VHC y la DM2 en pacientes provenientes del Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario de Los Andes (IAHULA). Se seleccionaron 40 individuos con DM2 (grupo A) y 40 individuos sanos sin antecedentes de DM2 (grupo B). A estos grupos se les determinó adicionalmente los niveles séricos de glucosa, insulina y las transaminasas y se les calcularon los índices HOMA y QUICKI y los anticuerpos contra el virus de la hepatitis C (anti-VHC). Los niveles de glucosa e insulina séricas así como los índices HOMA y QUICKI, resultaron significativamente elevados en el grupo A con respecto al grupo B. No se observó diferencia significativa en los niveles de transaminasas entre ambos grupos. Sólo un individuo del grupo B (1,25%) resultó positivo a la infección por el VHC. El estudio realizado no encontró indicios de una relación entre la infección por el VHC y la DM2.

This relationship has been barely studied in Venezuela so we proposed the objective to study the relationship between the infection by the HCV and the DM2 in patients coming from the Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario de Los Andes (IAHULA). Forty (40) individuals with DM2 (group A) and 40 healthy individuals without antecedents of DM2 (group B) were selected. The serum levels of glucose, insulin and the transaminases were determined. Additionally, HOMA and QUICKI indexes and the presence of antibodies against the hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) were also calculated. The levels of serum glucose and insulin as well as the HOMA and QUICKI indexes were significantly high in the group A when compared to the group B. Significant difference was not observed between groups in the transaminases levels. Only one (1) individual from group B (1.25%) it was positive to the infection for the HCV. Our study didn't find indications of a relationship among the HCV infection and DM2.
