Abstract
El artículo es una aproximación a las representaciones culturales de la mujer circulantes en la ciudad de Maracaibo, Venezuela a finales del siglo XIX. Se examina la relación que existía entre estas representaciones culturales y las exigencias de orden moral y buen comportamiento ciudadano, propias de los proyectos decimonónicos de sociedades “civilizadas”. La investigación realizada revela la existencia y reproducción de modelos de género vigentes para entonces en Venezuela y en la órbita del mundo occidental, los cuales resultarían en un confinamiento progresivo de la mujer al ámbito domestico, e irían de la mano con el desarrollo de una preocupación obsesiva por la moralidad y el deber, cualidades que
servirían a las clases medias burguesas de instrumento para señalar sus pretendidas virtudes y para legitimar sus pretensiones de alcanzar y mantener el poder político.

| Resumen en otro Idioma | An approximation is made to the cultural representations of women circulating in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela, at the end of the nineteenth century, and to the relationship existing between these representations and the requirements of order, morality and good civil behavior proper of the nineteenth century projects of “civilized” societies. The study illustrates the existence and reproduction in the city of Maracaibo of gender models operational in Venezuela and the western world, that resulted in a progressive confinement of women to the domestic sphere, and that went hand-to-hand with the development of an obsessive concern for morality and duty, qualities that served the urban middle classes as instruments to display their alleged virtues, and to legitimate their pretensions of reaching and maintaining political power. |
