dc.description.abstract1In this paper the philosophy of the Madhyamaka school of Mahayana Buddhism, founded by Nagarjuna probably around the 2d century CE is briefly considered, and it is related to the teaching known as rdzogs-chen. Though the type of Madhyamaka that most closely resembles rdzogs-chen is Mahamadhyamaka, belonging to the subtle and inner Madhyamaka, in this article only the sub-schools of Swabhava-shunyata-madhyamaka (dbu- ma rang-stong-pa) are reviewed—namely the Prasangika and Swatantrika sub-schools—and the sGra thal ’gyur chen po’i rgyud (Skt., Shabda maha prasamga mula tantra) is followed, according to which the theoretical view of rdzogs-chen corresponds to that of the Prasangika sub-school. In my book The four Philosophical Schools of the Sutrayana Traditionally Taught in Tibet: With Reference to the Dzogchen Teachings, the relation between the sub-schools of dbu-ma rang-stong-pa and dbu-ma gzhan-stong-pa and the rdzogs-chen teachings is considered, showing how and why the Madhyamaka sub-school that most closely corresponds to the latter is Mahamadhyamaka (Tib., dbu-ma chen-po).es_VE
